SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Speaker Series: October 19, 1774 – The Annapolis Tea Party (The Burning of the Brig Peggy Stewart)
DESCRIPTION:The Burning of the Peggy Stewart was one of most pivotal Maryland events that spurred our state closer to the American Revolution. Hear how Mordecai Gist, elder brother of famed Carroll County community leader Colonel Joshua Gist, headed a contingent from Baltimore City to demand the ill-fated cargo of tea on the Peggy Stewart be burned following the events after the Boston Tea Party. He, along with another leader, Nehemiah Moxley from nearby Claggettsville, retrieved the brig’s captain and brought him before the mob to force the actions of that day. Later in December of 1774, Mordecai Gist would organize a company of militia known as the Baltimore Independent Company and became their Captain, a forerunner to the famed Maryland 400 of the First Maryland Regiment. Discussion will surround the contributions of two very notable patriots and others at this famed historical event. Mordecai Gist would later rise to the rank of Brigadier General commanding troops of the Maryland Line throughout the entire American Revolutionary War.\nThis fascinating talk will be given by Tim Dioquino. He was born and raised in the Baltimore area with strong family ties to Carroll County. He is affiliated with many lineage organizations such as the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution, The Society of the War of 1812, The Society of the Cincinnati, and the General Society of Colonial Wars representing members of the Gist and Moxley families.
