This federal holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing news that the Civil War had ended, and all enslaved people were now free—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.\nThe Historical Society Campus will be closed this day in observance of this federal holiday. We will reopen on Wednesday, June 24 for our regular business hours (Weds. – Fri. 11 am – 4 pm). Visit our website for upcoming events and 250 celebrations.\n
