Memorial Day is a national holiday to honor the lives of the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice serving their county. Local icon, Mary Bostwick Shellman, was passionate about remembering our fallen heroes. In 1868, Shellman organized a march to Westminster cemetery to lay flowers on the graves of Union soldiers to commemorate the sacrifice of those who fought in the Civil War. This event is considered Westminster’s first Memorial Day parade. Below is a reading of a poem written by Shellman titled, “The Boys in Blue,” to honor their lives and memory.
