Following an investigation of the Shriver Tannery at Union Mills, Sam Riley will turn to a larger discussion of tanneries in Carroll County with a focus on the ten tanneries in the area between Sam’s Creek and Union Mills in 1820. According to the 1820 census, those tanneries processed more than 7,000 skins and hides into leather, an important product that was produced locally until the early 20th century.
