CARROLL 250

Carroll 250 Event: Commemoration of Gen. Anthony Wayne’s Army Crossing of the Potomac & Commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the 26 May 1775

On June 1, 1781, after crossing the Potomac at Noland’s Ferry Gen. Anthony Wayne and about 1100 Pennsylvania Continental troops were on their way to join forces with Gen. LaFayette, who was resisting Lord Cornwallis’s campaign of destruction and depredation in central Virginia. The crossing was perilous, and they lost four men when a boat capsized in the surging river after recent heavy rains. They spent the night in Shelburne Parish on June 1 and 2. It rained a good part of the day on June 2. On June 3rd they marched through Leesburg before settling in by Cox’s Mill at Goose Creek. Today, this is seen as part of the Yorktown Campaign which resulted in the British surrender in October 1781. Sponsored by the Sgt. Major John Champe Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).and the Fairfax Resolves Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) or Chris Vaughan, (703) 431-8838.
