Box Lunch Talk: Church of the Brethren: Beliefs, Practices, and Customs Presented by Reverand Dr. James Benedict
The Church of the Brethren [known officially as the German Baptists before 1908, and unofficially as Dunkers] first came to Maryland and what would become Carroll County in the mid-18th century. Brethren families, congregations, and institutions have played important roles in the county. This presentation will focus on Brethren beliefs, practices, and customs, as well as the contributions of Brethren to local history and their current presence and impact in the state, country, and worldwide.
James Benedict is a pastor and scholar with four earned graduate degrees in theology and ethics. Born and reared in Iowa, Dr. Benedict has been a resident of Carroll County for thirty years. He served the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren as pastor for 20 years, before retiring in 2017. Since then, he has been a Scholar in Residence and adjunct professor in the Center for Global Health Ethics at Duquesne University while also serving part-time as an interim pastor at three congregations. He is married to Kathy, a teacher in the Frederick County School system, and they have three adult children and six grandchildren. Dr. Benedict’s long-standing interest in the history of the Church of the Brethren has led him to teach courses on the subject and to write articles and book chapters for denominational publications.
As always, there is no registration for Box Lunch Talks. You bring your lunch, and we provide the drinks and desserts (thanks to our volunteers and staff). The cost is $3 for HSCC members and $5 for nonmembers.
