Carroll 250 Speaker Series: Celebrating Self-Governance: The 250th Anniversary of Maryland’s First Free Election After Independence and the 1776 Constitutional Convention

Join the Union Mills Homestead and special guest speaker, Hon. Joseph M. Getty, Senior Justice, Supreme Court of Maryland, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of Maryland’s first experience with representative democracy.

In early August 1776, residents of our area voted in the first election after independence and elected representatives to write the Maryland Constitution. One of those elected representatives was David Shriver.

The Constitutional Convention was held in Annapolis and the representatives met for the first time on August 14, 1776. The Convention met through November 1776 to write a Declaration of Rights and the Constitution and Form of Government for the State of Maryland.

There is no cost for the event. Tours of the house and mill will be available for a small charge.
