Graybeal Scholarship & Digital Library Internship

The Historical Society of Carroll County currently offers the Jay A. Graybeal Scholarship, aimed at supporting local students who have shown a keen interest in history and related fields. The scholarship is designed to encourage academic excellence and foster a deeper understanding of Carroll County’s rich historical heritage. The award is $1,000, and the application is located on the Community Foundation of Carroll County scholarships webpage. See the criteria here

In addition to the Graybeal Scholarship, HSCC is in the process of developing criteria for a paid digital library internship to launch in 2026. Check back here for more updates regarding this position. 

Students wishing to obtain hands-on experience at HSCC should fill out the Society’s Volunteer Form online or complete the Youth Advisory Committee application. 

The Jay A. Graybeal Scholarship

The Jay A. Graybeal Scholarship is named in honor of former HSCC Executive Director, Jay A. Graybeal. This scholarship is open to college-bound high school, undergraduate and graduate students who are residents of Carroll County for at least one year. Students must be majoring in history or any specialty area of study in history to include but not limited to; museums, archival, library, historic preservation, material culture, American studies, archaeology, anthropology, art of architectural history or preservation technology; or to students pursuing a recognized certification or apprentice program dedicated to traditional arts, industries, trades or crafts. Students must also demonstrate diverse interests, with special interests in areas of the humanities or sciences, and be involved in extracurricular or volunteer services to be eligible for this award.
