Collections Planner/Consultant (Contractual) (Call for Proposals)

Term and Schedule: 3-6 months, Flex Schedule

Compensation: Contingent on mutually agreed upon timeframe and specific work scope

Description: Reports to the Executive Director. This is a temporary 3–6-month appointment.

Primary goals of the assignment include:

  1. Develop a Collections Plan with specific recommendations for cataloging, photographing, rehousing, cleaning, and short and long-range storage needs.
  2. Create processing spaces for objects and manuscripts and initiate an inventory plan for collections.

Secondary duties and responsibilities:

  • Rehouse, as recommended or required, designated HSCC collections
  • Learn HSCC collections database and provide training to staff and volunteers
  • Accompany the Executive Director on occasional specialized collections-specific tours

Educational requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 2 years of related work experience

Skills needed:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, board members, community members in person and in written communications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft products including access database
  • Familiarity with museum collections software, a plus; and willingness to learn Proficio/Rediscovery
  • Familiarity with collections standards and best practices, including demonstrated knowledge of collection numbering standards
  • Highly organized
  • Ability to work under pressure with deadlines
  • Experience in non-profit settings a preference
  • Experience in arts and culture or public history settings a preference
  • Physical ability to move and transport objects in between multiple spaces and buildings on a regular basis

Visitor Services Assistant (8hrs/wk. with anticipated Saturdays)

Position Description: The Visitor Services Assistant works alongside greeters and docents and takes a key role in welcoming guests to the Society. The position is needed for Saturday hours between the hours of 10am-4pm. Extra hours between Wednesday-Friday are sometimes available. The position assists in various outreach initiatives including but not limited to giving tours, assisting patrons in the Society’s bookshop, assisting on occasion at various Society programs and outreach events and assigned administrative and clerical functions.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provides opening and closing assistance and is the Society’s lead visitor services assistant during open hours on Saturdays
  • Works closely with the Society’s staff in the execution of clerical duties, including the reconciliation and preparation of the shop’s income and register reports
  • Assists with patron services on site, including tours of the Society’s historic buildings and exhibits
  • Works closely with other volunteers, docents and students to enhance the visitors experience for patrons
  • Helps promote membership, events and programs and encourages patrons to join HSCC
  • Assists on occasion with rental opening and closing procedures under the direct supervision of full-time staff
  • As time permits, occasionally assists with outreach, event and educational activities
  • Executes clerical and administrative functions as assigned by full-time staff

Skills and Key Requirements:

  • Self-starter and highly organized
  • A passion for working with the public and outgoing
  • Ability to cover Saturdays (10am-4pm) and when scheduling conflicts arise, or when time-off is needed, coordinate with staff to cover Saturday hours
  • Experience in non-profit settings a plus but not required
  • Experience in arts and culture or public history settings a plus but not required
  • Basic computer, email and Microsoft-based software proficiency required

The incumbent will start with a 6-month probationary period. Expected start September 2023. This is a part-time hourly position at $12.80 per hour. Pay is issued bimonthly via direct deposit via a time-sheet.
